An excellent article, CR. It is an objective analysis of the talk of separation and its very grave consequences. With regard to one of your good commenters above, I cannot remove the image of “merde” pie.
We lived the pre and post 1995 exit from Montreal to Toronto. Royal Bank had a split head office. They would quietly relocate departments down the highway, small enough moves that nothing hit the press. We relocated ourselves in 1996, months after the referendum. Value of our house dropped by 33%. Took a haircut. I loved living in Montreal, for its own joie de vivre as well as helping me understand Canada better. And the changes are undeniable.
As a veteran of the two referendums I can echo unequivocally that Montreal became the husk of what it was and while the city has rebuilt somewhat it’s by far nothing of the eminence it once held. And while the grievances from our francophone community were real from my perspective we have overcome and I think better integrated as Quebecers and Canadians (again my on the ground opinion) For Albertans please listen that no matter how you slice this pie or rationale or argument, the filling is still brown and it’s not made of chocolate. Look to history here in Quebec and to Brexit. Let’s talk and not walk away from each other. Nice article. Thank you CR.
I think Quebecers are more level headed now. We see the world for what it is and not what we hope it would be. Racism will always exist on the fringes. It’s a constant battle to live beyond the hysterical sound bites and misinformation. Canada Strong reverberates here as well ! 🇨🇦

Yes, you're right about the Alberta separatists. But they are just as racist as you say Quebecers are, perhaps even more. They are incredibly homophobic, transphobic, lgbtq2sia haters, bigoted with regard to other cultures and religions. Alberta separatists want a pure white European, Aryan, Christian province turned sovereign country. Many of them want that. They will deny it, but their social media comments prove otherwise. They're even intolerant of any other political ideation that differs from their own. The most far-right separatists would have everyone but separatists deported out of the province and out of Canada if they could.
I didn’t say that Quebecers are racist. I said racism will always exist on the fringes and yes there are racist individuals here also. No doubt. Just wanted to clarify that point. And as for the Albertan case, I believe they also are in the fringes, bristling now because they feel energized by what is happening south of the 49th and thinking that their moment has finally arrived. What we need to do is push back and say, no it has not nor will it ever, because humanity bends toward good and that it will always appear or perhaps “they” will promote the narrative that there are many who feel disenfranchised in Alberta but we know better. Fine! I misinterpreted your meaning. Apologies for that, but don't try to tell me there's no racism in Quebec. I've seen to many videos of racism against Indigenous people in Quebec. It doesn't matter if it's less or more racism. It's still racism.
My point wasn't to criticize Quebec Francophones. My point was a truthful discussion about separatists in Alberta. I stand by what I said where Alberta separatists are concerned.
Right from the first mention of the international law for landlocked countries I've been telling separatists access to tidal water is not a given right they will have immediately upon winning the referendum. I've told them the right to cross over a foreign country must be negotiated between both countries. I've told them there'd be stipulations and costs set down by the country bordering the sea that would have to be met or BC in this incident could stall access to tidal water forever and there wouldn't be a thing Alberta could do. But when do separatists ever listen to anyone other than other separatists? When do they ever look things up for themselves to see if something is true?
How in anyone’s fantasy will the USA “save” them? And from what? I guess they will be thrilled to carry as many guns as they want. Or pay exhorbitant rates for healthcare. Or give up their OAS and CPP. Not to mention living in a country who’s democracy status has been downgraded. America is playing them for fools!
