People's trust in so-called experts is greatly diminished from authoritarian misinformation and unwarranted infringement on human rights in supposedly free societies. Trump is unfortunately undermining respect for any corrective efforts by showing contempt for long-established trade arrangements and even recent formal agreements such as CUSMA/USMCA, alienating allies in the process.
Yes the USA is effectively a rogue state and Canada must pivot whether it's a Tory or Liberal minority government in charge. Europe needs to adjust and make changes beyond the usual declarations
Calling Vance's speech disastrous certainly clarifies the bias on display here--and it's not in favour of liberal openness to reality. Vance shocked those accustomed to the self congratulations of the Western elite but not those concerned by the suppression, even persecution, of objections to favouring mass immigration of even those opposed to Western values.
It is more polite to call his speech disastrous than being insulting, which is what the general perception of how it was received in Europe. It was considered a triumph of the will in America, but not in Europe.
It's a conference for politicians discussing security policy. Vance used it as a platform to insult his counterparts while pandering to Americans who don't care for such topics. It's resulting in long term damage to America at the expense of short term political points to the Americans on social media. Canada doesn't benefit much other than conversations about greater Canada and European cooperation.
